# Why "Staying Curious"?

Maybe the name of this newsletter (? Blog?) should have been PAY ATTENTION – the sticker I’ve had on multiple iterations of my work laptop for over a decade (thanks [Scott Stowell](https://notclosed.com/?ref=stayingcurio.us)). But paying attention isn’t in and of itself useful; the reason WHY paying attention is so important is because it’s a way to satisfy an underlying curiosity.

Asking why things are the way they are, seeing the connections between things, and imagining something different. But what’s important is the “staying” part. It’s an active stance rather than a state of being. It’s so easy in this moment to disengage and tune out, and I would argue that staying curious in our lives and communities will serve us better in the long run.

I don’t exactly know what this space will be, and I’m approaching it with the spirit of experimentation. Maybe this will turn more into a stream of consciousness, Tumblr style, or a place to work out and polish some of my thoughts. Is blogging chic again? Everything seems to be Y2K coded at the moment, have you seen all the “vintage” digital point and shoot cameras lately?

This is also a conscious effort to avoid the siren call of “making content” for the ‘gram. Don’t get me wrong – it feels like I can’t NOT be there, but the formats push you into certain thought patterns that I’m feeling a little trapped by. So this is a way of having a balanced diet, so to speak.

Whatever it is, I fully expect it to blur between “art” and “design” (these are just labels that come with so much weight and expectation that they become kind of useless). A way for me to stay curious about my own practice, and notice and take inspiration from what I’m seeing in the world. I would like to wear all the hats simultaneously.
